Classes

The curriculum of SDU® starts at the very beginning! In classes one through five, you will learn about the emotional value of scrapbooking along with the basics on how to plan and prepare for a scrapbook project. These theory classes present the foundation for beginners while exposing advanced students to view scrapbooking in a whole new light.

Scrapbook Basics
Scrapbooking is a paper craft that encompasses memorabilia, photographs, and the written word to create keepsake albums. In this class you will learn about the hobby of scrapbooking. You will also learn how to prepare to make a scrapbook.
Tools of the Trade
When scrapbooking began few tools were available on the market. As the hobby has grown a variety of options fill scrapbook store walls. This class will familiarize you with the basic tools you need to begin scrapbooking. As you become comfortable using the basic tools, you will want to branch out and try some of the more advanced tools.
Journaling
The lives of those you scrapbook have great meaning. Photographs are a snapshot of one instant in a string of events. They cannot tell a story as well as photographs AND words. The old saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words" does not apply to a scrapbook page. The photographs are the illustrations for the written word. In this class you will learn why journaling is important, what to journal and how to journal on your scrapbook pages.
Color
Color is the scrapbooker's richest resource. Choosing and using color correctly is among the most difficult choices in designing a layout. In this class you will learn color theory as it is related to designing scrapbook pages. Once you understand how color works, you will be able to create color combinations effortlessly.
Layout Design
The success of a page is due to the sum of its parts. In this class you will learn that photographs, journaling, titles, enhancements, color, line, lettering and shape are the building blocks of scrapbook design. You will learn how and when to use each of these elements to create great layout designs. Finally, you will learn principles of design structure that will help you create strong designs.

Now that the framework of theory is in place, we can build on our scrapbook structure with a series of dynamic hands-on technique classes. All of the class materials are provided… plus space is allowed in each chapter for project assembly and reference.

Matting
Matting is one of the most spectacular techniques for making photos stand out on your scrapbook page. Enhancing a photo with a mat adds interest and excitement to the image. There are many ways to mat a photo in order to create a well-designed scrapbook page.
Stickers
There are a variety of wonderful stickers on the market today and scrapbookers love to collect them all. In this class we will work with a variety of sticker mediums to create projects using exciting sticker techniques to get the stickers out of your collection and onto your scrapbook pages.
Lettering
Whether through individual stamps, handwriting, computer fonts or other lettering forms, the style of lettering used in the creation of titles and journaling plays a large role in the development of the mood and theme on a scrapbook page. This class will teach the history, importance and improvement of handwriting along with the pens, markers and stamps used to develop personal style in letter formation.
Titles
The title is a critical element in layout design and can be perceived by the reader in many ways simultaneously: as something to read, as shape, and as a visual element in which the letters themselves express a feeling or meaning. In this class you will learn to create spectacular titles for amazing page presentations.
Punches
Punches are exciting tools that cut shapes from paper. In this class you will learn how to maintain your punches, adhere punched pieces, build shapes into images, and create punch scenes. With a little punch know-how, you can add creative punch embellishments to your scrapbook page.

Once you have graduated from the SDU program or have taken the prerequisite courses (Color and Layout Design), you are then eligible to take these advanced classes. The Methods program features classes designed to refine your skills in specific areas of interest. At the end of each Methods class, a special collectable pin is provided for you to proudly display!

Patterned Paper
In this class, you will learn about the parts that comprise the whole of patterned paper. We will rely on the basic principles of color theory as we consider how color and pattern work together to create a harmonious scrapbook layout.
Embellishment Savvy
Knowing how to use design elements and principles is the most essential part of constructing a scrapbook page and communicating the mood, theme and story of the photographs. In this class, you will learn how to use embellishments to strengthen a layout design and reinforce the content of the photos.
Advanced Punching
In the SDU punch class we discussed the important tools for punch art, how to take care of punches and the basic techniques for punch art. In this Methods class you will learn how to get the most out of your Paper ShapersŪ using exciting techniques featuring the CornerAdorner® styles. You will make many different projects that you will be able to recreate later with all your paper crafting projects.
Selectives Program
Whether you are planning a trip to Disney or are longing to scrapbook Disney memories from the past, this Mickey & Friends class is a sure way to get your "Magical Memories" into one album. In this class you will create ten 8x8" scrapbook pages with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto and Donald. You will also receive an idea book with never before published memory album ideas all in an 8x8" format, and a Disney collector's pin that you won't find in any of the theme parks.
